Good fishing spots

Hey all,

Since the weather has become warmer, I guess its time to get out the rods and tackle box. I'm sure lots of us are keen fishermen and know a few good spots, so would anyone like the share where they have had successful catches?

It could be off the headland, jetties, lakes, or out deepwater.

So name a few names/places/directions if possible, where you guys go, and it could be a BIG help for other members as well!

For starters, I like to head up to Narrabeen lake with a few mates and just fish off the bank. Its a small inlet that flows under a bridge next to Woolworths. I generally catch something all the time, so bites are very common. The fish there are mostly undersized, so I just put them back, but every now and then, you can land a big flathead. Once my friend had a flat head about 40cms about 2 metres from the bank and it bit the line and escaped!

Another spot i find is quite good is at Clifton Gardens near Mosman. Off the jetty is quite good. You dont want a southerly wind though.

Anyway, share your fishing spots for all to share, preferably around the Sydney area, but other regional spots are most welcome!

Cheers,

Wes laugh.gif

the rods and tacklebox have been out for sometime now mate!

i have caught a 4.5kg flathead in the same area you are talking about (narrabeen) but i was closer to the mouth of the waters flowing from the beach. used to go out there abit but not so much now. now i head all over mostly up to the central coast for a quick getaway. otherwise cabarita wharf, gladesville bridge are ok if you're only going for a few hours at night. i'm on holidays now and i'm going at least twice a week but even that is not enough.

wondabyne, mooney mooney and the hawkesbury river have also been pretty good for me lately so has Garie beach but thats rock fishing and thats only for experienced fishermen.

I've managed to catch decent sized blackfish off the rocks around from the point at the southern end of Warriewood beach if you are heading over the northern beaches way. It was also great for spearfishing too but that was back 10years ago when I used to live there.

I was wondering how many were info fishing too! clap.gif In fact was thinking of starting a poll. The reason I got into cichlids (I've only had my first tank for 4 weeks) was because of my passion for fishing. (I've practiced catching, killing, cleaning, cooking and eating fish, now I can also keep them alive!)

I live on the Central Coast, have a 5m Quinnie and fish at least every 2nd weekend (before kids it was every weekend with the missus). I'm no-where near being an expert but have fished extensively on the coast (beach, rock, estury, offshore) and can certainly recommend some locations. However most of these are best for certain species at certain times of the year and require some specialisation of fishing gear.

So if for example somebody wants to catch whiting from a beach I can recommend the Enterence beach during summer on a rising tide during the day on worms or yabbies.

I don't have any secret spots but am happy to pass on any useful info. thumb.gif

I was at mooney mooney (hawkesbury river) this morning at the crack of dawn till about 830am, didnt even catch a cold!!!

3eyedfish, can you give me some directions to windang from sydney, and also let me know how you go about prawn scooping? (what to wear, what nets to use, time of day, depth of water ect )

Cheers, Alan.

Also, the break walls at kurnell, where are they from the rock groins near the big oil tanker wharf?

wukerwa dam about 50 minutes from orange

bank fishing for catties and red fin along the rocks

but the best fishing is on a boat casting into the snags with spinners(lure) or any largeish lure bass hunters etc the yellow belly, sliver perch etc are super aggro and will attack anything very good eating and very good fighters

ophir 45 minute drive from orange

all bank fishing for trout and red fin tazi devils(lure) allways work casting along snags or into the shad works best. all good hunting but very hilly and game hard to find dry.gif

gosling creek just ouside of orange

bank fishing red fin and trout also tazi devils but usually under size and alot of weed

suma park dam(water res)

not allowed to fish their but alot of red fin and trout will also catch catties all on live bait worms, and crickets are the go

lake canobolas 20 minutes from orange

good sized red fin alot of trout best to use the peirs casting towards the reeds and 5 minutes up the moutain very good hunting

so by that i think you can say i love fishing and hunting but mukerwa dam would have to be the best

where abouts in central coast? i usually go prawning up at the entrance then work my way up to budgewoi-brisbane waters etc.

Where abouts at the Gladesville Bridge? at the wharf side or on my mates boat.

cosmiccreepers are you talking about the town side or the otherside closer to budgewoi? i used to fish all over there alot a few years back but i feel like it has been over fished and all you catch there now are littly's, shame though it was a great spot people have to stop taking home or killing all the small fish they catch!

If you venture down south, Tuross heads has some great fishing in the lake and off the coastline. We used to fish in Tuross Lake about 15 years ago and you always caught big fish and had plenty to throw back but it was almost fished out a couple of years ago with all the commercial netting going on. But it has now been banned and the fish populations are once again booming. Great for flathead and Bream. Nothing beats fresh flathead cooked whole in foil on the BBQ with some butter, white wine, diced capsicum and shallots....mmmm tasty but doesn't overpower the flavour of the fish. thumb.gif

katanaone, I agree the Central Coast is heavily overfished, and of course there are people keeping undersized catches. I believe however, the worst offender is commercial nets. Sure they throw back the little ones, but they are usually dead once the catch is sorted.

For me, shore based fishing is all about half tide rocks, near wagstaffe. Most of my fishing adventures these days are with little kids (not mine thankfully) or friends who are scared to venture off the bituman track.

Hi Alan,

Well with prawning got to go at night mate, get urself a prawing light at big w or the fish tackle shop, if u dont like getting wet then get a suit as well to wade in, get a large net similar to landing net, but smaller and softer netting and longer at the bottom so you when u scoop up the prawn shake the net and the prawns fall to the bottom of the net and u dont have to empty it as often. go in water about waste deep that should be fine.

So if u come from sydney, i think u would take the princess highway down and take the port kembla exit past wollongong - check whereis.com.au for exact. But yeah its good, when u go over the bridge at windang turn first left and gointo one of the carparks next to the water.

But little swimmer is right, at this time the tourists down there are like ants!!

Town side. I think the caravan park is called Elargo waters or something like that.

I agree that it has been overfished, but in the last few months there have been some good catches. It seem mostly the tourists that keep whatever they catch, regardless of the size. I personally throw back everything I catch- thats how I get to fight that bream every time laugh.gif .

Cheers, Cassandra.

ok el lago thats pretty close to the marina. i used to keep my beers cold in the water under that little jetty you were talking about. i have caught heaps of blue swimmer crabs, a large octopus and a sting ray of my trusty weighted net over there oh yeah heaps of prawns too...not bad for fish either.

I personally throw back everything I catch

on ya cassandra every bit counts you're doing better than me i get hungry looking at a big flathead etc.

ducksta i was talking to a dude from the fisheries just behind the marina and he said that all commercial netters (nutters) will be gone by the end of 2005(wish it was 2004 but hay)

charlie, great idea thumb.gif definately count me in.

central coast sounds real good to me scienceman.

cheers...ryan

We could organise something for the weekend of the 22nd this month (either saturday or sunday).

Can probably start on the early Morning (2-3am) to catch the tide, and finish around 10 o'clock.

There should be competition for who catch the most, or the biggest (not drink the most..). Will need some sponsor for the prize..

After that, we will have BBQ.

I will need a lot of volunteers to organise the above, from location (map), transport, to organising the food and drink.

Let's see if we have enough interested party..

Why not say' It will be at (insert name of secret fishing spot) at this time. BYO food and drink, if you need a lift let us know we'll see what we can do.

Might be easier as some people might wake up at 2am and think 'bugger that' and go back to sleep, leaving people stranded (transport), hungry (food) or lost (map) laugh.gif .

Just my 2cents.

Cheers, Cassandra.

The 22nd / 23rd Jan has a high at 7 and 8am respectively. If the location is inside an estuary such as Brisbane Water, add 2 hours. ALthough I do think a 2/3am start is a little excessive. I would favour a 5am start till 12pm finish.

some possible locations:

- Beach fishing off the Entrance Beach (near the caravan park on the north side)

- Woy Woy from the ferry wharf along to the boat ramp (good spot for a picnic)
