JPM1976
Bought these from the NSWCS auctions. Need help to make sure these fish are right. They were bought as Pseudotropheus Saulosi. Here is the pic of the 1st male just changing to adult colour looking at the barring the fish looks like a saulosi to me. Next is of a male that has changed from juvenile colour but looking at the fish looks different to the male above to me looks like a melanochromis interruptus. Anyone can help with this? Thanks
Josh
Neither fish looks right to me, but both look like young fish changing colours. Give them some more time. The horizontal bar makes me think they may not be Salousi.
cobaltcraig
Looks like there's a bit of chequer board Johani in there I have seen some of these getting around the Fairfield area also in some retail stores labelled as saulosi CheersCraig

Buccal
Wow, that's weird, we had the same thing on pcs with males of Saulosi looking like this,,, roughly 6-9 months ago. There must be a breeder either here or there sending them.
JPM1976
Yeah that's what i was thinking the saulosi don't have the horizontal bar.Alsoas i stated these were bought from the cichlid society auction, i bought2 of these at the auction in September , than another lot of 9 at the major auction in October. Not off someone in Fairfield, though maybe the breeder in Fairfield is a member at the cichlid society.Just disappointing. myster619
Hmmm, a fish that looks like saulosi which also changes color.I have been nothing but disappointed at the auctions. The majority of fishes get there I have seen were mediocre quality, and ill-packed. Once I got myself a pair of tropheops. Went home and found out both were males, one was just less colorful. Both were 15cm+ , so no excuse.
myster619
Maybe give them a bit more time.

The tropheops 15cm plus pair does not sound right to me. With all tropheops species none that I am aware of get 15cm plus for males and females.Tropheops Chilumba males only gets 12cm and the female 10cm which is the species I presume you are talking about. Which does resemble PS Saulosi. Tropheops tropheops does get larger with a max size of 14cm for males.
Kamz
These are true adult Saulosi.. It's hard to tell how pure the species is during the colour transformation.Time will reveal all..
Link2Hell
Hi Jasonthey seem to have one too many stripescan you take any pics of them in a tank so they aren't stressedalso can you contact Lionel or John so they can check the saleshistory at the Sept meeting and if the same person put more throughin Oct auctionI can understand your disappointment and this why you need to notifythe club and for the club to follow through to the seller who may notbe aware there is a doubt of purity regarding their stock regarding NSWCS auctionsif you examined the fish on the night and noted they weren't a pairthen it is only a matter of notifying one of the committee at the deskthis is different to Jason's bag of yellow fry that are only now startingto colour changeif they were entered as 2 fish or entered as a pair then that's whatthey would have been put up for sale asmost times the auctioneer would try to vent them if they are labeled a pair and if there was still doubt the auctioneer should note thissexing fish in a bag under poor light and sometimes a not too clearbag isn't always easyto any that have attended the auctions you will know me as one of theauctioneers and you will have noticed I will express opinion if I thinkthere is quality in the fish, any faults that are noted at book in onthe bag or that are obvious, I will try to sex the fish but if I can'tyou will be advised, if the bagging or water appears to have a problemto get it rebagged and to get through the sale of fish as quick as possibleto reduce bag timeunfortunately you can't reject a lot if the quality of colour is lacking butthere are lots rejected if they don't seem to correspond to the labeled specieshowever with the reduction of lots there has been a noticable reductionof what could have been termed dumping and in my opinion improved qualityand range
Buccal
I've read some info from America a long time ago that male Saulosi can have a extra stripe. This was observed in two separate batches of wild caught collections.

Josh
A holding female doesn't really mean too much of they aren't pure.

Phenomena
It's a shame that it has come to this. I had the same issue before. I'm a sceptic. Although we have some 'good' saulosi, how can that guarantee that they are pure/never tainted along the lines?
zigzagfish
I agree they are cross , I have a colony that I bought from Charlie wright before he got out of the hobby (Around 3 years ago) they are very good quality , compering to the photos they look nothing like them.
