moving large tanks

I have found a 6x4x27" tank for sale and was wondering what the best methods of moving it would be? Do you think a removal company would be the best idea? Its hard to organises 20 mates for a drinking session let alone weightlifting.

This is an interesting topic for me too as I've seen quite a number of advertisement in Sydney area that are selling 4 or 6 ft and me and some mates are thinking of buying however we have no idea on how to carry it back home.

Let's see what the experts experience are :)

i agree..

i recently moved a 6x2x2 off the back of my ute into my garage solo

then got a mate to help me move it from garage into house

u have got to remember that the more people u have holding it, the harder it is to move through doorways etc..

ive never found the weight tobe a problem with tanks, its just the awkwardness of their size, and trying to be gentle..

u should have no worries moving a 6x4 with 4 people.. i hope u have double doors tho because that's a mighty wide tank!

For the 6x4 tank above, a normal ute willl be sufficient. You can hire one for half a day for $60.

I dont think you would need more than 4 people to move it. (depending on the amount of spinach you eat)

yeah there not that bad there is a thread on here i think were someone had to brack down a 10foot tank to move it but yeah thats a 10x4 not a 6x4

congrats on the buy

Hire 4 glass suction grips and get 4 guys hire a ute or trailer

remember styro for under the tank, cardboard and a couple

of straps to hold it down

see here Kennards Hire

what's the place like that you have to take it from and what's

your place like where it has to go

are there any stairs ?

ok just to clear some thinks up the 6x4 id 15mm glass 20mm bottom around 800kg. Im not huge

im confused

are you planning on moving it with water :lol4:

yes it is going to be very awkward trying to get it in the house because its so wide but dont be scared with 4 people there taking turns holding it swaping over at door ways and such you will be fine

suction grips are an alsome idea

the worst thing about moving a lage tank is your fingers sliping from the awkwardness of the way you have to grip the tank,

Im like other people here, Ive moved a 6x2 10 mm with 2 people just me and a mate, and slid it though the corridors and down a flight of stars ,a 6x4 will not need 20 people, as someone said if you need 20 people you need to hit the gym, i think max would be 4 or 5, and when you need it to move it through the door slide it through with some towels, mats etc Those glass suckers come in handy cos the difficult part is trying to grip it off the stand,4 foot is pretty wide and wont go through standard doors. But if you dont feel comfortable in moving it just hire somone

i have a 6x4 and it is over 400klg empty. i doubt his is 800, but even at 400 it is a nightmare to move these things.

the way they got mine here was on a flat bed ute. so that is the best way to move it. just have poly underneath it and tie it down, should be no problems.

for the moving part, get 8-10 guys. we had 8 and struggled. most of the time we just had it on a blanket on the floor and pulled it across the tiles. the biggest issues usually is getting it through doors. measure EVERY door first. make sure that the tank will fit through BEFORE you move it. make sure you have space either side. I got mine in with 5mm on each side and it was hell. you dont want to repeat that. get at least 2 pairs of suctions cups, but better to have 4 pairs. once this is up you WONT want to be putting it down.

good luck

yeah its not going inside, it will be outside. Its not 800kg but close. It has been reinforced with heaps of glass. the stand is 1.2 off the ground. I think i will hire a specialist removal company to move it. If it breaks is there fault.

I have a few 6x2x2 and they are a piece of wee wEE to lift with 2 people. This is a beast of a tank.

Don't forget to take picture during the process of moving it so we all enjoy it remotely :):8 .

Removal company normally refuse to move glass as they dont want to bear the risk. I would tor arrance the ute and arrange help with your mates

Good luck

I'd recomend rolling it on its side so its only 27" across then most doors shouldn't be a problem. I've had to move a lot of large tanks around by myself recently. I've been using a 2 wheel trolley like couriers use etc for deliveries. You could borrow or hire a heavy duty trolley and strap it to the tank. use the wheels to do the work and 4 people will be able to take the weight and manouver it into place. Prob need 5 plus to lift it into a trailer and off etc. The suction cup things are very handy also, they prevent you jamming your hand through a narrow doorway.

That is a huge tank, good luck with the move.

Cheers Couchy
