pat williamson
Hi I am after a new canister filter and must say I am a die hard EHEIM fan so that decision is made. I currently have a tank with a 2228 at one end and a 2217 at the other . The 2217 is annoying to clean and clogs faster , I am of the opinion though that whilst the 2228 takes longer between cleans it is mainly because the water just bypasses the media when dirty thus flow rate stays the same giving the effect that the filter is infact clean. I am leaning to the 2217 as I believe it may actually be better at trapping the waste and indicating better that it needs a clean (as annoying as it may be ). Anybody else have similar conclusions or other comment please feel free !. regards Pat.

Link2Hell
use an old (dead moter) canister or cheap new canister and connect it as a prefilter before the Eheim and fill it with nylon scouring balls from the supermarket, this will trap the larger matter before it hits the finer filter material in the Eheim check it after a couple of weeks to guess when it will need a clean , just don't clean the pre filter when your doing the Eheim Chris

pride
I'm considering either of the two eheims Pat mentioned also to replace my cheapo's which are quite noisy and dont seem to be doing a great job. Does the 2217 have shut off taps or are they just srew on taps?
