black trim around fish tank

Hi Everyone,

What is the point for some tanks to have a black plastic trim around the 4 corners of the tank?

Im sure it wouldnt be for structural reasons (well I dont think so anyway), is it for aesthetics and to make the tank more pleasant to look at or what?

And can they be removed to paint the back panel etc...

It is purely for aesthetics....and to hide messy seams produced by "not-so-proud" tank makers. You can remove it for painting the back of your tank without affecting the tank structure.

It also protects the edges from damage. I prefer them. It hides the silicon and gives you somewhere to take an air line down the front of the tank if you want too. Also a great place to let the algae grow for you bristle nose. LOL.gif

I prefer my tanks nude wink2.gif

However the last bloke I had make some tanks for me would not make them without the strips due to the 'corner protection' issue. He waffled on about some Aust standards etc and basically said if I didnt want them on there, I could remove them myself.

I think my next tank will be a curved glass one, no need for strips at all!
