myster619
How much does it cost to get a cichlid DNA tested for purity and what is the process?
Chuckmeister
DNA testing used to cost thousands but that was some time ago. Not sure why you would dna test a fish. All it will result back is the dna of your current fish with no other data to compare it too. Its likely they will come back and say, yes its a cichlid..or am I missing something?edit - the best way to cross reference a fish imo is to research the net but also buy books and cross reference from reputable authors
Josh
I also think it would be a waste of time if there is no known record of the DNA of that fish. any particular reason why you want to DNA test your fish?
myster619
So I would have to test a pure cichlid as well to compare with the test subject. I want to test it to see if it is a pure species.
Josh
You Would need something to compare it to, so you would need a sample of DNA to compare it to.

myster619
Okay. Where do I go to do this?
Josh
I have no idea who would do the testing, maybe ask a vet or someone like that. I dont know where you will find a sample to check it against. Its probably alot of effort to got to just to find out if your fish is pure.
Skippy
Okay. Where do I go to do this?Try contacting the Australian Museum, they have a DNA lab that does a lot of research with DNA. Otherwise they might be able to put you on to a company that does the testing commercially.http://australianmuseum.net.au/search?keyword=dna&search=Search
Ged
I would contact the Molecular Fisheries Laboratory based at the University of Queensland. Email Jenny Ovenden j.ovenden@uq.edu.auBeing a university that may be able to access the appropriate DNA markers for a particular species from overseas. As to the cost your guess is as good as mine. I know when I had to send off samples for DNA testing of stud cattle it was only around $40 per test. These also were sent to the University of Queensland.
