sponge filter question

i have run out of available air hoses so when i need to run another egg tumbler lately i have been disconnecting a sponge filter here or there.

is it ok to leave the not running sponge filter in the tank?

rather than take it out and have to wait for it to build up bacteria again.

will the bacteria live on the filter whilst its not running? OR

will it be dangerous and cause an ammonia spike?

cheers

luke
