Rolla
Hey guys, How many kg's of coral sand would you need to cover a 4x2 around 3-4cm deep And who sells it the cheapest in Sydney? Just deciding if i should get some used substrate (Washed way to much substrate this year lol ) or go the new stuff. Cheers

jrod
Use the same method as you use to measure your tank volume. 120x60x60 divided by 1000=432 (your tanks roughly 432 litres) Now to figure out the volume of substrate 120x60x4 divided by 1000= 28.8 (so your just multiplying the length of the tank by the width of the tank by the height of the substrate) So I would go with roughly 30kg of coral sand Hope this helps mate

Aquaholic
you need to work out more than the volume. ie 28.8 litres. One litre of coral sand weighs more than one litre of water. 45kg will be needed to fill the tank to 4cm. There are a few online calculators here
Jodannar
I recently did the substrate in my 4x2x2 with coral sand. Bought 40kg of it. 20 in 2mm and 20 in 5mm. I used about 30 kg of it in total. Substrate covering isnt too deep, maybe 2cm.
Josh
What Aquaholic has said is right. Volume and weight arent the same. I would double the volume to be sure. About 50kgs i would guess. The size of the sand would influence it aswell. You would need less 20mm coral sand as the voids would be larger.
jrod
I beg to differ! I think you will find 30 kg should be spot on. I use this method every time and it works perfect! My method will work for any fine substrate guaranteed
