mark_1
is the weir filter on a 48x18x18 a good filtration method or should i stick with a canister
Rod54
My understanding of filtration is.. At the top of the scale(needs the most filtration)is Marine tanks and at the bottom(needs the least) is a well planted soft water tank. so the choice of filtration depends on the type of fish you are going to keep and how many you plan to house in the same tank, proposed maintenance schedule(water changes, gravel vacuuming)......and the aesthetics...ie breeding/rearing /display. Some times the simple(smart) thing to do is buy a good cannister filter....but no doubt there is a sense of achievement in the DIY approach.....even though it may be full of danger and in alot of cases...overkill! DanceswithDingoes
It would depend on what you planned to put in there? These decisions are best made before you buy the tank. Remember the more effective the filtration, the more stock you can keep, the more water changes you need to do
D6C1
I run two canister filters. Eheim 2 2028 and an aqua pro 1500. Water quality is good. But not excellent! good enough to get fish breeding in there. But if you let it go and dont change the water for a few weeks, you get floaties, and poo floating around. Anyone can suggest anything to fix this problem? Sorry Mark. Not trying to hijack your thread :D
DanceswithDingoes
Toufic, try replacing a cannister with a large internal or HOB filter just as a mechanical pickup. Those Otto internals are poo magnets but need to rinsed every water change.
mark_1
yer im goen to run an otto 1200 next to my canister intake pipe so it picks up all the poo and sedement so then i wont have to clean my canister for like 6 months
Josh
If i had the choice I would go with the weir set-up. It allows the most options down the track IMO.
