Willy
hey guys my aro is now 30cm, my question is: how heavy should lid be so he wont jump out, when his fully grown. was thinking of putting 1Litre water bottles on top of all my 6mm lids. people say put sandbags but then light wont shine through tank as good but i dont know if this is too heavy for my tank. i also have a hood, but one of my friends aro jumped up and broke the lid, then lid fell on aro head and bled to death someone who ownes one of these fish at fully grown, show us how u do it
Alex
I have a 50cm Green. I have not weighted my lids at all, they are made from 10mm glass and am yet to have him bust through one. If i was going to weight them i would use sand bags, just place them next to the light fixtures not underneath them, that way you wont block out any light from above. I had a 60cm silver break 12mm glass lids that were weighted. I dont think the weighting does an aweful lot, because if the arowana hits the cover glass with enough force to move it then chances are the glass will snap anyway. r.d.m
mine used to bust out of the standard cover glasses, igot some10mm ones cut in one piece, problem solved.
Ducksta
yea im agreeing with alex and reddevilman. I havent had an aro but other fish which used to knock lids alot. By using thicker glass lids (10mm) and having only one piece per open section (usually a section would have 2 piece lid) the fish wont move them. But then when they hit them, they will be knocked out cold
Cannula
At O'Malleys they use bags of gravel on the lids of their 2' long arowana's tank.
Guest african-au
lowering your water level will work to your advantage! 10ml lids are solid & safe with weighted sand bags! keep your silver well fed & give him some playmates if possible leave a light on near by silvers tend to go a little skits at night especialy if visability is poor my tank is opposite a large window which blinds stay open at night as long as silver can see,,hes heaps less jumpy cheers chris
