oakes
hi, i have just set up a tank with a mixture of washed river sand and shell grit. However i'm wondering if i did the right thing because the sand contains many fine particles and i don't know how i will clean it properly during tank maintenance... i'm sure if i used a gravel cleaner it would all siphon out. Any ideas?
Josh
I have sand in my tanks and use a vacuum type cleaner to clean it. I just put the end of the hose in a large bucket, It goes straight outside, and then let the bucket over flow onto the grass. The sand stays in the bucket and I just tip it back into the tank later. Unless you are using undergravel filters you shouldn't need to dig to deep into the substrate. just scrape along to top to remove any waste on the bottom of the tank Josh
23Skidoo
I have fine sand substrate in a couple of tanks, i'm just careful when i syphon out water and replace whateever sand i lose with fresh clean stuff, as it is often heavily laden with detritus
YeW
Use a larger diameter "end" on your vacuum cleaner - try a cut off 1.25 l or 2 l PET bottle attached to a hose with an inline tap. HTH -
