Substrate: Fry tanks

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

wondering if i should have gravel in my 3ft grow out tank. Would the filter pick up more if there was no gravel?? Also the mother wil be releasing her fry in this tank sodo i really need to have a substrate in there??

Thanx

As long as you've spray painted the bottom of the tank (from underneath) or the polystyrene under the tank, you don't need anything as a substrate (or at most a sprinkling of sand or coral sand.)

You can leave it white, but I've found the fry get a bit freaked out and tend to hide in the corners in a bare tank with white bottom, but in a tank with a dark bottom, they will happily swim over he entire area.

If the mother is releasing them in the tank, give them a bit of ground cover, like that plastic fake grass you can get at most lfs.
