Ged
Penny cleaning the sand takes a bit of practice but you can use a standard gravel cleaner. Start the syphon on the cleaner and then hold it about a cm above the sand and it will pick up the surface detritus at the same time as doing your water change. Both Age of Aquarium and Majestic (sponsors) have them available online. http://www.majesticaquariums.com.au/health-maintenance/cleaning-products/aqua-one-gravel-cleanershttp://www.aquariumproducts.com.au/gravel_cleaners.phpThere are battery powered vacuums available such as Marina Multi-Vac Battery Gravel Cleaner or the Eheim Quick Vac Pro but these are not recommended for sand substrate. Skippy
Take a 1.25 litre or 600ml soft drink bottle and cut the bottom off. Push a length of 19mm clear PVC tubing from a hardware store into the top of the bottle and you have your own DIY gravel cleaner.
intangcity
if you use a bottle penny try to use a stiff bottle such as powerade or gatorade etc coke bottles and other soft ones tend to collapse
