dawghuntr
Hey guys just thought i'd upload a progress pic for my 4ft African tank, see if you guys had any thoughts on the layout. And also my tank still seems pretty bare and thinking of adding more fish,i know people ask this all the time but what are peoples opinions on how many fish in a mixed african tank.. Cheers!
rosco
Looks good to me. I am on my phone so can't tell what you mixed my only comment would be rocks whilst looking great look heavy. It had always worried me having masses of heavy rocks in tanks but I am very unlucky and clumsy. Not a good combination when you put waterand glass in them mix lol.Cheers
dawghuntr
Yeah I was worried about the weight at first and the more I googled it I found a link to a video of a guy stacking like7-9 REALLY heavy sandstone rocks on his tank all balanced on a brick! And it was fine gave me some confidence to do this! And most of them arnt balenced on the glass all stacked on each other then on the base. So fingers crossed! Link2Hell
big difference between Tempered glass AKA Safety glass compared to float glass that most tanks are made fromthe round stone on the left in the middle would have me worriedseems a bit too symetrical but if that is what pleases your eye then go with itan alternate is to silicone the levels, then just stack levels works best to arrange the stack levels outside the tankon a template of the tank footprint and silicone them when your happy with the fitthis will help spacing so it has predetermine structure rather than a pile of rock that takes up the complete end of the tankis it a standard 48" x 14" x 18" H as this makes it a bit tighter to work with using those good size river stones
dawghuntr
Yeah ok don't know what glass my tanks made of :$ I thought about using silicone but thougt that nigt be a little too perminate. Hopefully the rock on the left won't be a problem as I've got 3-4 rocks on the base to spread the load. It's just so hard to get these tanks to look impressive without gaining height and most of the other rocks from the lfs are $$$$$
Link2Hell
LOL Dawg I hear youit will be float glass like 99% of the tanks madesilicone is not that difficult to if you want to breakthe rock group down as you only need a blob justto hold the shapeif you're like everyone else on here you will look at itin a few weeks or months and go no don't like thatand change it all again
dawghuntr
Ha ha yep your most probably right! Are you recommending silicone to prevent the glass from breaking? Because of stability? The weight might still be a problem though?

Ged
The tank is looking good and so are the fish. I always have concerns when stacking rocks and in particular river stones. The key is to make sure that the weight is evenly distributed, that fish digging in the substrate can undermine the stability and that you can't dislodge any rocks when cleaning the tank or catching fish. I work on the principle of having two isolated rock piles which are of different heights and a clear open area between the two.
Chilli Powder
Also, you don't want to displace too much water with those big rocks and I would definitely not lean the rocks against the glass!. Why take a chance.I had similar river rocks and I pretty much had the scape Ged suggested. it was for Taiwan Reefs and it worked well. I had a few thick val growing too. Also like Chris said, no doubt that you will rescape it each week. All of us have been there and done the same thing and will continue to do so!!!
