hammerhead
Hi Guys, I've been told that people use both coral and beach sand. What would be best for PH levels etc? Also, does anyone know where to buy both as cheap as possible in Sydney as I need a fair amount for my 6 x 2 x2. I'd appreciate any info on this topic. Cheers! aymenz
Welcome to the forum mate, Definitely the coral sand will help buffer the water in the tank more then Beach Sand... I have both mixed together, looks pretty nice in the tank and my Malawis love it. You can get the beach sand from bunnings for something like $6 for 15kg as for the coral sand you can try Landscaping places or your LFS which will be a bit more expensive than other places.... or if you are not in a rush check the classifieds section here, lots of bargains... Try something like, Search and type "Coral" in the search box then select Buy and Sell... Got the following results which are still available I reckon: http://www.aceforums.com.au/index.php?show...p;hl=coral+sand http://www.aceforums.com.au/index.php?show...p;hl=coral+sand Cheers
Elapid
You can also use shell grit mixed with beach sand for the same effect. You get shell grit from animal produce stores, it's cheap too.

charleyzheng
i'm using shellgrit. but the shell grit is quite coarse. some of my mbunas have developed black around their mouths. i think this may be due to the fact they pick off the shellgrit and caused damage. but i cannot be certain if this is true. if i got to do it again, i would pay more money and just get the coral sand. especially if you have a small tank, then it's not that dear. i got shell grit cause i have a 5x2x2 and it only costed me 45 bucks to fill the whole thing

Anyways hope it all works out
