White greyish clay for substrate underlay

Hi guys,

I found a local lake around the corner from my house which seems to have large deposits of a type of white/greyish clay deposited everywhere. Not sure if it could be used as a bottom layer that would benefit rooted plants. I have read up about clay and have used the reddish/orange colour clay before with success but not sure about this stuff. I have learnt that the orange stuff is that colour due to the iron content which probably means this white stuff doesn't really have any at all. Pretty smelly btw, don't think its due to organic matter though.

Here are some pics, any ideas? Is it safe, not concerned about pollution really.

I've only ever used the red stuff too and it seemed pretty good. If the clay is smelly I'd be inclined not to use it, an earthy smell might be ok but anything else I would expect indicated something in it that shouldnt be. Just my thoughts though :)
