gold comp tankmates

I have mine in with cyprochromis leptosoma malasa.

I have been told that you can also have them with paracyprochromis nigrippines.

I guess it depends what size they are (the other fish as well as the comps in relation to the water capacity that is best suited to them).

I have only recently started keeping these fish so don't know a great deal about them.

At the moment mine are juvies so no probs keeping them together in a 3ft tank.

Hope this helps a little.

Cheers,

Tootie.

Julidochromis would be nice. Especially the smaller ones like transcriptus, or marleri gombe. Some telamtochromis vittatus are another option. Buscheri are another smallish rockdweller that are ok. They can sometimes get very territorial though, but altos can usually handle that well. Others that could be chosen (but only one or two of) are; mustax, leleupi, caudopunctatus, chalinochromis bifrenatus.

Cyps might end up a bit cramped in a 3ft in the long run. They like lots of company, and swimming space. Paracyps tend to hang around a bit more so would be a bit better suited to a 3ft imo.

Try not to be too tempted to mix too many types of rock dwellers in a 3ft tank. Altos I dont consider an exclusive rock dweller. But julies, and many neolamps are. Many of the rock dwellers do get territorial. SO if you can raise them from young together you will increase your chances of them living peacefully together

I agree that any of the Leptosoma species will work with Alto's

regardless of size and live in the upper section of the tank

you only say the Alto's are small so I'll guess about 3-4 cm

to me a group of each would be all I would be growing in a

tank that size

you could look at Macrops, Decampsii or one of the other sand

sifter forms rather than another substrate spawner that would

eventually compete for structure in a quicker time frame

especially in a 3' tank but in the end you will run out of space

and this will not create the best growth potential from the Alto's

that are painfully slow to grow and need high protien food to

get there in the quickest time

stick with 2 species Alto's and Lepto's :thumb

I agree :thumb

Gold Comps especially young ones do best when they are the dominant species/fish in a tank. Considering they are quite passive with other species it is best to stick to mid and upper dwellers. Leptos are great for tankmates. Julios are Ok in a larger tank but only a couple with five Comps would be my recomendation.
