YeW
These are redeye cicadas (<i>Psaltoda moerens</i>) on a tree in Berowra Heights. Standing beneath it was, well... I'll let you know when my hearing returns. It's not a good photo, but I was using a macro lens for long distance shots, never the best idea :D! <a href=" title="deafening by petrichor, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2123/2106852360_a4f6b0cd7d_b.jpg" width="655" height="1024" alt="deafening" /></a>

CThompson
Nice shot Dave. This has been the best cicada year for years and years. As a kid I used to catch green grocers, yellow mondays, double drummers, black princes, the occasional peter pan (if I was fast enough) and once even the fabled cherry nose (and let them all go again). For many years now I have not heard cicadas in the numbers that I did as a child (in fact not at all in some seasons) and fear that the dreaded indian minor is killing them off. This year they seem to be back in force but I have not heard any of the above mentioned childhood favorites, only the ones you depict in your photo Dave, so still have concerns for my favorite insect. Just go drker when it's time to shed. Once cicadas have come out of their shells (from being underground), they don't shed. The green-grocers we have up here are a variety of cicada that is green as a standard, similar colour as a granny-smith apple, but richer. There are ones called yellow-mondays, which may be a colour varient of the green-grocer, but other cicadas that are different in colour are also different in size and sound.
