hey guy's just wondering if there can be too much filter medium such as Matrix?

I have a canister and a internal filter with sponges in it and was thinking about getting some matrix in the canister along with the other stuff that came with the Ehiem and also putting the matrix in the internal and getting rid of the sponges? would this benift the tank any more it's a 3x2x2

On my 6x18x18 i run a large canister completely filled with matrix and shells. No sponge at all. 100%bio filtration. I find it cuts down on cleaning a little.

But, i also run an AC 500 with only sponge in it as a purely mechanical filtration. This is cleaned weekly.

If i were in your shoes i'd fill the canister with matrix and shells(buffers the PH) and keep the internal full mechanical. Also a 1200lph powerhead to help get all the crap into that AC.

Just my opinion

i have 2 canisters...... running on a standard 3 foot...

the sachem 500 is filled with bio balls and shells to maintain the PH level in the tank and the via aqua 360 is filled with the noodles and the sponges.. ....

they are too powerfull fo rthe tank but my fish like it anyway...

and i also do a water change every 2-3 weeks....

good luck with your setup...

cheers aymen
