tricky
Ive been running single sponge filters in my 90 litre tanks for the past 3 months. How often do these sponges need to be cleaned? As they dont appear to be discoloured at all and the water seems quite clean. I also dont want to kill the majority of existing bacteria. Im doing weekly water changes and the tanks each house 5 bristlenose around the 10cm mark. Some of these tanks have some fry in with the adults. Further to this what type of pressure should i be running through these? Currently i have them turning over with a fair amount of pressure that has massive bubbles that break the waters surface. Is this excessive or is the more air the better? Any advice would be appreciated? Thanks Ricky
hungsta
I clean mine every 3-4 weeks... the more the better... they do clog up pretty fast and more so if you are keeping bn... If you are only running single filters in each tank then clean the filters in the water that you removed from the tank during the water change. DO NOT clean them under the tap as you will kill off the bacteria... As for the bubbles, i have mine on full blast
Bijengum
In tanks where I use the sponges as the only filter I use two and clean one per month unless its a bristle nose tank when I clean one every 2 weeks.

D6C1
I would fill a bucket with tank water and squeeze the sponge in it till you are satisfied its clean. Dont clean it under tap water. Those sponge filters are awesome!
