Tiger
Hello all . Would anyone here be experienced with the use of "flagyl" to treat bloat .. All help will be appreciated Cheers Kevin
anchar
The most effective way to use flagyl is to make sure that the fish ingest it. Grind it up to a fine dust and mix it into their food - if they are Tropheus sp. defrost some frozen vegie meal or the like, and mix it through. Re- freeze and break off the portions as needed. If they have already stopped eating, I think you've got a real hassle. I believe that you can only continue the treatment for three days before the flagyl itself can be harmful. When one of the "specialists" get back from the cichlid meeting later, they will be able to help you out more than I can. You'll prob. need to get the flagyl from a vet unless you have really good connections at your LFS. HTH for now. merjo
Bit Racer
I recall reading somewhere that you need to slowly increase the temperature to the lower 30s when treating with flagyl metranidizole as it is only effective at close to human body temperature - so lots of aeration needed during treatment. You also need a prescription to obtain flagyl.
Tiger
Thanx guys ....... "Metronidazole" does anyone know mgs per litre ?????????? I need to know fast Cheers Kevin ......... ps .......surely someone here knows
Zeb
Hey Kev, heres a quote from another site; "Metronidazole is the preferred medication. It is the same medication found in Hexamit. It is also found as one of the ingredients in Paragon II. Dr. Axelrods Mini Atlas recommends 100mg metronidazole per 10 gallons every other day for 3 treatments (and the dose can be safely doubled). Hexamit recommends 250mg per 10 gallons with the same time schedule. I found that the 100mg was not effective but the 250 was. Some recommend 3 consecutive treaments rather than every other day (have not tried it). Metronidazole is a commonly available medication at any pharmacy or vet, so contact your vet (if you have one) and get a prescription--it will be a fraction of the price than buying it mail order or from the local aquarium shop. 250 mg Capsules or tablets work fine (Capsules--empty them; tablets--simply dissolve in warm water). Metronidazole in food. The Axelrod mini atlas recommends 100mg of metronidazole mixed with 1 tablespoon of food. The food could be beefheart (then refrozen in small servings) or a paste of dry food and water (then frozen into small servings). from this site MASLA.com Hole in the head disease or from this site: Metronidazole usage for Hole in the Head The dosage that seems to be recommended is 250mg to 50 litres of water and then filtered out after three days (do not have any other medications in the tank at the same time). Dissolve the tablet in water before adding it to the tank and I have never raised the temperature when treating fish though apparently you can. If the fish are eating you could crush the tablet up in the food and feed it to the fish dosing them for a few days - that way the medication gets absorbed more. If treating for hole in head, suggest you also feed earthworms or food which has been rolled in brewers yeast - contains various vitamins which helps cure HIH and helps prevent it recurring. scp faq 'diseases'
BLACKBAR
dunno if your fish still has bloat or not but get some epsom salts from the chemist or supermarket it works for me
PHL
Why go straight to antibiotics, when as Blackbar said, try Epson salt first (I actually have some in all the time), and look at preventing it with enough roughage/ballast matter in their food. Often bloat is more due to blockage rather than infection, unless you are looking at dropsy (rather than just bloat), where the scales are standing out. If so, the prognosis is not good; I have had to put a few of mine to sleep.
