Red devil questions

I have recently got a male red devil to possibly breed with my female of about 8 months. I have had the male for about 3 weeks and all the male seems to do is chase the female around the tank non stop, although he gives up when she settles in her pvc pipe den. When i have the seperater in the tank she is alot more confident and even trys to get at him through the seperator. She has been showing her ovipositor for about 2 weeks now but for a fish that is about 5 to 6 inches long it looks very small, about the size of a match head. Is the attempted violence from the male a sign that these two will not breed or should i give it time? im considering trying him with a different female but i am loyal to the one i have now as i have had her for about 8 months and she has really grown on me. I want her to breed but am unsure if she will. Any help in identifying the good and bad signs to breeding these two awesome fish would be great.

Thanks, Alan.
