Ant
What are the main differences between Johani and Interuptus?
Ant
From pictures that i have collected from the net, it looks as though the interruptus is darker and the bottom stripe on the fish is dark while the top stripe is alot lighter/brighter. Chester
As far as I am aware Melanochromus johanni has stripes whereas the Melanochromus interuptus has a checkerboard pattern (that is why it is called the checkerboard johanni).
Ant
both are known as checkerboard hence the confusion between the species: Johanni: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/photogallery/...johannii_01.jpg Interruptus: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/photogallery/...erruptus_01.jpg The two pictures here are basically what reflects the differences between the two species within all the pics i have collected. These pics are from www.cichlid-forum.com. Anthony PS: I guess what confuses the issue further are location variations

Ant
hmm according to that article the Interruptus females are suposed to look like female Melanochromis auratus......im not questioning the validity of this article as it was written by someone with a million times more knowledge than i but i would say that this 'dwarf auratus' would have to be a differnt variation to the Interruptus we are supposed to have here or does this suggest that the Interruptus isn't even in our country? Anthony PS: What a confusing subject
Chester
I still think you will find that M. johanni have horizontal stripes and M. interuptus have a checkerboard pattern. People who have so call johanni which have a checkerboard pattern really have M. interruptus.
