Chuckmeister
Got told about this type of filter today. Apparently its been around since the 60's (I'm not that old to remember thankfully )Found it interesting as its similar to a side drop with less messing around setting up. Not sure I like the idea of maintenance but each to their own I guess Something to think about
Canberra Alex
they are good filters I think purely poret can supply that king of filter foam but I have found although less long lived the cheaper Chinese foam good for a little while too.the Cheaper product does go limp after a year or so
Ged
Purely Poret does advocate this style of filter and have some great resources. http://poretfoam.com/hamburg-matten-filter.phpThey also have this in their resources. http://poretfoam.com/resources/Hamburg%20Mattenfilter.pdfA number of members have had great success using this stile of filtration. As with all things and as you have learnt with your planted tank project that in the end you get what you pay for in terms of quality and longevity. mjoconr
I've been using HMF's for about a year using poret foam and I'm very happy with the tanks using them.
Flycaster
How big are the tanks that you run on them?
mjoconr
Well. The 49cm cube and a 4 foot and a 5.5 foot (this one is had a sump with the poret in the sump so I suppose its not a true HMF)I'm in the process of building a rack with 3 x 100L tanks with HMF at the end of each tank with the water dropping down to the next on the end which does not have the HMF.This will also have a Hydra Stream 2 as I'm very interested in this filtering system. Chuckmeister
Personally myself I would rather use this in a sump. I can see the benefit of in tank and sump but out of sight, out of mind for me.I have a little space in my sump after my last sump rebuild recently...was going to put in more media but maybe I'll put in this sponge. It can basically act as a porous bulkhead
mjoconr
Actually it looks really good. In the cube its in the back, its black so its so it look like a black background and its hids the pickup and the heater. I've black painted about 50mm on each side of the tank to cover up the ends of the pad.It really does look very good its on the kitchen bench in an area we could not reach. The 4 foot does not look as nice but thats because I did not spend the time to correctly set it up. If it had add little walls in the left and back the black foam would not be visable because of the black painted glass on the back. Again the pickup and the heater are behind the foam.
