Ducksta
"I have one that looks like a trimac don't know if he is a true one or a crossbreed"This is the problem. People who want to keep pure species are struggling to find things they are really confident are true.
Link2Hell
Sorry but to me the answer is NO you don't have a Trimacyou have something with Trimac in it's past
maniacyosh1986
Yeah looks that way but still a nice flowerhorn. The only fish I know are purebred are my festae texas and jags
sorroz
No to it being a Trimac from me also
maniacyosh1986
Ok. So what do you guys think it's crossed with? Could be a red breasted Costa Rican citrinellus or lyonsi.
Link2Hell
I doubt anything that exotic Lyonsii aren't out here that I have heard ofas far as Citrinellum & tagging a type locale of wild Devil complex out here forget getting names of fish from O/sea's forums to try and match itthere is no real way of guessing its parentage unless you knowwho and where it came from and ask themthere are way too many input options in Frankenfish
maniacyosh1986
Jeff rapps actually suggested it was a lyonsi but he said it definitely feature heavily from the trimac as well. I thought a trimac was just a low grade flowerhorn?
sorroz
I thought a trimac was just a low grade flowerhorn? Wow man you need to do some more research ....flowerhorns are just a man made crossbreed that has seriouslyaffected the hobby with people dumping poor quality flowerhorns onto the market as trimacs.Trimacs are a true species that the flowerhorn is based on when they crossbreed them and create Frankenfish (flowerhorns)Trimaculatum good pure naturally occuring species..... Flowerhorn has there own following but basically bad and frowned upon by most purist hobbiests.Kevin
myster619
Hey maybe someone should seriously breed them so more people know the real trimac
maniacyosh1986
I know what a flowerhorn is and from the pics on Google my fish has just about every attribute a pure trimac does. See the problem with these forums is everyone thinks they know exactly what something is or how it will behave. I have a tank full of Americans people said u can't put together... well they are all getting along fine. Even if it is a cross breed, this probably will in fact be like other animals where the cross breeding can and has eliminated the genetic faults these creatures have. don't know what the big deal is I said I don't know if it is pure or not and really how do any of u know either? Lol u guys need to relax a bit
Buccal
The only way to know purity on many occasions is a trusted knowledge of its history.A lot of budding aquarists do see things the way you do,,,, but long term experience shows knowledgable people's opions start to relate to one another and we can all confirm our findings with one another. The fish in your tank are still babies, and Americans of this calibre do seem to snap and hell breaks loose at about three quarter size most of the time, if not, nearly every time.A lot of people do swap around and get board of their fish and change the species they keep and never get to see the fishes true habits. So, some people may give experiences/advice based on a premature outcome without knowing the true mature behaviors. This is very typical of both Malawi and American fish keepers,,,,, it's crazy how big some Malawi fish get without most people ever knowing. (big difference between a 2 year old and a 6 year old fish).Just all comes down to how you want to call the shots.
maniacyosh1986
Very true. I am prepared to offload fish when the time comes. Next year i am moving and that's when i will upgrade to a 10×3×2.5 can't wait. Epic tank. I am new to this hobby as I've only been in the cichlid scene for 1.5 years. All advice is taken on board and I do appreciate it. Cheers
Link2Hell
reading text can be taken the wrong way to how it was intended and the comments were not meant to be taken as having a go at youwe have found that once the larger Americans get past the teenageperiod they can develop a total change in attitude and as Buccalsays fish usually get sold off before reaching max sizeACE leans to keeping true strain species and having correctidentification of fish so that what is here will continuethe problem faced is more people want to create there ownfish to give it a trade name and only look at that without seeingthe long term problem this can create with new hobbiests thatdon't know any better and then try to sell hybrids as true speciesin a lot of LFS there is no ethics in educating the customer ofthe choices or even correct identification of livestock in the shopbefore just taking the money and also it can be people justdon't care eitherHow do we know it's true to species ?Sorroz has true strain Trimacs and is one of a few that haskept them true for many yearswe have each been keeping cichlids for well over 30 yrsdamn that makes feel older and I would but it takestoo long to just get up nowwhy don't they breed more ??a major problem facing large Americans is the spawn sizeverses the market need which is another topichope this answers some of your questions
maniacyosh1986
Too easy man. What would u guys suggest as a good stocking for my 8×2×2? I really like the festae jag devil and texas. Any chance they can live together?
Link2Hell
what works for one may not work for someone elseso all you can do is try what you like and maybe movestructure around to break up territoriesa mates American tank was 10 x 3 x 3 and had 20+ 15-25cm fishand it worked with minimal aggression but there were timeswhen someone had to be evicted
