chrisso81
Hi all, just wondering if this combo would work in a 6X18 or if anyone sees any glaring mismatches. I have kept fish for years and have bred Tangs and maintained a big mixed Tang community in the same size tank before without any dramas:S petricolaA calvusC leptosomaN similisN pulcherJ reganiMy biggest concern is whether it would be too much for the similis? I have plenty of shells and could create a pretty dense shell bed for them.At the moment the tank houses 2 clown loaches, 5 Cyps, 3 bristlenose, 3 calvus, 4 julis, a cylindricus and 3 leleupi but am happy to let stuff go for the above combo. The tank is at least 10 years old so thinking of upgrading to a 6X18X22 high. Is there any point in the extra height or should I just go a standard 6X18.Anyway, looking forward to some input. Cheers!
Chuckmeister
personally I think it will work. You probably wont get any fry surviving but for display it's likely to work.Your leptosoma will love every inch of tank you give them (height) (and width actually). I always say, get the biggest tank you can either afford or fit.
brucem
I'd go the extra height if you can.Looks good. The only question I'd have is the pulcher. I'd probably go caudopunctatus instead. That's just my preference.

Chuckmeister
I agree with Yanke, if you have a taller tank you may find that some of your leptosoma fry may survive. If you give them a tall corner to run to for example tall rockwork or plastic or real plants then you may see some survivors being included in your colony. To be honest, I've had calvus and leptosoma (and others including multifasciatus. ocellatus etc) in a 6x2x2 and never really had an issue with predation but as every tank is different you may as well prepare for the worst. I did have loses but it wasn't a massive predator fest
Buccal
Deeper tanks allows strata zones for species to co-exist much more effectively.I have many crazy mixes going on, and tank is 1 meter deep,,, so yeah, as all said above, the deeper the better. yanke
what kind of the C leptosome are u going to get for the tank
rosco
I would go for extra height like everyone else mentioned and a school of at least 12-15 leptos they like numbers. You may find the calvus will clean up your similis fry as they are efficient but some of your pulcher fry should survive they are good protective parents especially if it is heavily rocked. chrisso81
Cheers fellas, thanks for all the replies!Looks like I'll go the 6X18X24, a 20 or 22 inch high would have been a custom job and would probably cost the same if not more. I was a bit paranoid about the extra 100kg's but figure if the tank and I don't go crashing through the floor during maintenance the floor should be fine!In terms of fry survival rates I'm not too fussed, although having some Cyps survive would be nice and would help build the colony. I have nowhere to grow anything out and I also have some pics of a J transcriptus X leleupi somewhere from my last community, so there is always the chance of something crossing in there.Does anyone think the pulcher would be too aggressive? I have never kept them but have always loved the finnage hence their inclusion in the list.I have 2m and 3f leptosome mpulungu that are the surviving members of a colony I've had for years, and would love to add to them but also doubt their purity as they throw a solid navy blue or speckled dorsal. I'm not sure if this is a trait associated with mpulungu or not. I do like the look of mpwimbe so if the mpulungu are duds they'll come out and I'll hunt out something else.I have been out of the scene for a while and all the breeders I knew have packed up their fish rooms, so not sure where I'm going to source the new fish from, in the classifieds here I can see that I can get 10 petricola for the same price as 4 from an lfs down here. Yikes!Anyway, thanks for all the tips and info, appreciate it!
