benm_79
I hear that black marbles are best to use for breeding Synodontis petricola. I'm just wondering why black works best over multi colored marbles? I've got a heap of normal marbles but black is the one colour I don't have, but I'm presuming I'll be purchasing soon. Ged
S. petricola are egg scatters and they are looking for the safest spot to hide their eggs hence the black marbles. I have seen dark blue marbles used but they tend to look darker in water to be almost black.
Alvon
AS Ged said..90% of the success journals I have read with spawning the Petricola have all used black marbles. If it works well enough, I wouldnt be changing too much. If you have the time on your hands, maybe experiment a bit. Try one with black and one with multicolour..I have seen a lot of breeders use different size black marbles also, not just the one size.CheersAlvon

Joel
I have used the regular glass 'cats eye' marbles with plenty of success before.Maybe you'd have more success with black or dark coloured marbles but you don't need to be too successful... These throw hundreds of eggs at a single spawn.Just make sure that your marbles are at least two rows high if you get what I mean. They just need to be able to fall through to the bottom without the chance of being eaten by the cats and also have enough water circulation to them so debris doesn't settle on them. I have also seen these spawn and grow out very successfully in a 10ft, well stocked, Tanganyikan community aquarium. No marbles were used but there was alot of crevices, ledges and caves etc so the fry had a chance to get a start - the rest is up to them.I find that these work best in numbers, ie. upwards of 10 cats to a colony.Good luck with them.Cheers
benm_79
Thanx Ged, I read that earlier and was actually about to ask if anyone has tried the egg crate idea. It sounds like a good idea
