Yabbie Dabbie Do
Im setting up my cichild tank and brought 20kg of 3-5mm coral sand. How much should I put in my 4ft tank to keep the Ph up to its required level. Ph is at 7 at the moment. Is it just a trail and error test?
noxious_nasties
Everything has a maximum saturation point of solubility... With coral sand it isn't going to raise it above the pH level cichlids can handle so its up to you and aesthetics. Thicker layers aka deep sand beds are home to anearobic bacteria, which release hydrogen sulphide gas as a bi product of their nitrate reduction ability. If the sand is undisturbed this can prove harmful but most people don't seem to report deaths due to this case (as far as I'm aware). Yabbie Dabbie Do
Thanks John. I have exisiting gravel in my tank, should I remove it or is it okay to put the coral sand on top of the gravel?
noxious_nasties
Depends on whether you like the look of the sand on gravel. Won't have much effect chemically. It will however be alot harder to separate if you want to resell the sand, so keep that in mind. John
