Yabbie Dabbie Do
Hi guys im new to th cichlid scene and I am just setting up my tank for them now. I collected a heap of rocks from the beach to make caves and hidie holes for them. Is it ok to use these rocks from the beach or should I only use fresh water rocks. Cheers! shawn87
Give them a good clean and leave them in the sun so anything that u may have missed will die in the sun light
mcloughlin2
Depends on the type of rock. Rocks that are high in calcium carbonate/limestone won't be suitable in tanks requiring low pH. Any rock collected from near the water line of a beach needs to be soaked in freshwater for a few days and then allowed to completely dry out for a week or so to remove any excess salts and any living matter within the rock. Yabbie Dabbie Do
Thanks for the info. I was worry about excess salts and minerals maybe leeching from the rocks but this doesnt seem the case. Thanks for all the replys!
JayT
Along with drying in the sun, i always soak / steep anything i add to my tank in boiling water to be sure
