mianos Posted March 28, 2004 Share Posted March 28, 2004 I just stripped down my canister filter and it had a layer of smelly algae all over the inside of the power unit. I wanted to put it in storage so I needed to clean it very well. What I did is stripped it down to submersible parts and dropped it in my tank of bred apple snails and guppies. All I can say is wow! After a day everything is brand new. The apple snails are about 1cm so finding them in a stripped system was easy. I don't like them in my main tank but they sure did a great job. I put one end of the pipes near the power head to get some water convection through it (not on it but near it) and the snails crawled right inside the plastic tubing and cleaned that up too. happy man!
