Hi all, i got some rocks from a friends garden today that have a bit of a metallic tinge to some of the edges and was wandering if it would be ok to use in a tank. They were originally from the beach and have some pretty impressive holes and crevices in them.

cheers

As far as I'm concerned rocks with a metallic tinge to them are bad for fish so shouldn't be used. Bad in what way? Well I forget what the reason is so maybe someone else could fill you in on that :) HTH

Define metallic?

Taken from another site -

Metallic-looking minerals like pyrite (fool's gold) or galena need to be

avoided. Metallic-looking minerals are usually sulfides, but can also

be arsenides, selenides or antimonides. They can oxidize under water,

releasing acids, potentially toxic metals and other solutes.

In fact, mined rocks in general may cause problems because they can

contain small amounts of soluble or reactive minerals that are removed

from rocks -- like stream-rolled stones -- that have been exposed at the

surface.

Ahhh, thanks for the tip Luket, I just went straight to my cichlid tank and removed the large rock covered in pyrite!!! I thought it looked cool with the fools gold shining under the lights, didnt realise it was toxic.

Cheers, Milhouse.
