skipbl92
I have 5 Saulosi's and the are about and inch to 1.5 inches long. I am thought I was witnessing a male trying mate with a female. Both fish seem to be shaking at each other so I was wondering if they were trying to gain tank dominance. Any ideas or thoughts?
Chilli Powder
Hi,the correct terminology is Ps. saulosi . Capital S in saulosi deems a hybrid. Anyway, at 1.5 inches, are they showing any blue in their body at all? It is most likely for tank dominance and not for mating.Arj.
YeW
and hybrids are bad :o!Arj -I'd glad it drives someone else nuts also :D!Hi Skipbl -I'd suggest at the small size your are talking about it is all part of the process of setting the "social order" in your tank - nothing to worry about.Alternatively - some times young fish practice "spawning" without actually spawning .HTH -
skipbl92
Thanks, I figured they were to small to mate. Well at least I know I have 2 males. Thanks again!
saudukar
Dominance issues dont mean these fish are males. Females are just as likely to beat the hell out of other females if they want to. Dominance isnt a male emotion only. Alot of times the most dominate fish in the tank is a female.

fiona
I find one of the earliest sex indicators for saulosi is black developing along the leading edges of dorsal and pelvic fins. I have some babies at about 3cm showing the black so yours will quite likely have it by now. The ones with quite noticeable black are the boys. Girls may have a little but it will be much lighter and less distinct. It will take longer for the males to get the blue than the black. In fact I bought a coloured up young male some time back from Aline to add some new blood, put him in with my colony, he was about 2cm smaller than the rest, he went yellow again (don't beat me massa!). Now he's almost as large and he's developing the blue again.Hope this helps.
