Best Aquarium for rare fish

Tunnel Rat

Recommended Posts

I know I should not be asking this in this part of the forum but it has the most people in it.

Just getting back into fish and would like to know where all the good Aquariums (the ones that keep more of the rare fish) are in Sydney now. I would like to do a tour this weekend.

I've been to Auburn Aquarium.

thx for any help

Each type of fish has there own type of rare species. There are many categories; Malawi cichlids, Tanganyikan cichlids, Victorion Cichlid, Tropicals....the list goes on. Maybe if you could tell us what type you are searching for we could help you more.

What type of 'rare fish' are you looking for? Most LFS specialise in a certain area as well as catering for general community fish etc. Some specialise in americans, some specialise in africans.

You will find with cichlids, that once they hit a LFS, they arent that rare anymore.

There is generally more rare fish sold on forums like this in the classifieds than most LFS IME. But if you ask behind the counter at the ones you have already mentioned and are prepared to fork out, they will have, or definitely can get, 'rare' fish.

If you are after some rarer tangs you can try the shop at Hornsby. They have Paracyprichromis Nigrippinis and some Hecqui, these aren't usually seen at lfs's.

Guys and gals -

The admins of ACE find this sort of post nerve racking. It leads to commentry on businesses and potential libel. Ask a friend via PM or meet up at the NSWCS and discuss it in person - this is not the venue for discussion of the pros and cons of various businesses.

The best place to find rare fish is these forums...

Because they are rare they are usually expensive, and not many people know about them, what they are, or how to keep them happy. For these reasons not many shops will stock truely rarer species, as they cant really move them.

So on these forums, you will find a lot of people that are interested in the enjoyment of keeping more obscure types of fish, and the challanges related to the discovery of keeping the unknown.....

I would ask openly for exactally what you want, some of the sponsers can get a lot of things, but usually only if they are wanted, that is you would have to order it.

or you can take a look in the breeders register, at what people have on offer at the moment.

Remember no mater what you want it can be aquired for a price, althought not allways legal option within our import legislation..... wink2.gif

Sorry people did not mean to be a pain sad.gif

I have been out of the hobby for about 13 or so years and have just set up one of my tanks for a fish I liked. Not being after anything at the moment really I just wonted to look around at the fish available these days(beeking).

Just did not wont to wast my time going to Aquariums that stock your basic fish.

The reason I got out of the hobby back then was when I moved houses I lost just about all my fish some I had for 12 years or more fuse blew from short in moving dish washer. It happened when I was at the new house in winter time.It broke my spirit the only survivors was a Megalodoras irwini & a Liosomadoras oncinus (jaguar cat) I was a cat fish freak. So my tanks went in storage with all the gear did sell some of the big stuff.

The sort of the fish I lost were Fire eel I had for 11yrs, S/A arowana ,two fresh water rays (young 10'' disks) Black pacus,Sturgeon, many cats tiger & lima shovel nose Synodontis brichardi & angelicus a lot of pleco but back then we did not have L numbers Adonis x4 was going two grow these guys up to try and breed,Royals x 6 same try breed, blue eyes, golden nugget at the time we just new them as Hypostomus sp, and lots more.

I will not be spending that sort of money again on fish poor now married & mortgage just setting up my 3'x2'x2 and the 2'x2'x2' thats up and ruining looking at africans as I always liked them but did not have the room back then.

So thats that one thing we did not have back then was the internet how good is the net for hobbys.

So very sorry if this post started trouble did not mean too.

Black Calvus are really nice, especially the all black ones. I think the Moliros are all black. Just like that one you bought today.
