Colfish
hey col foam squares? would have to be the very coarse plastic type, otherwise it block up very quick. i just use a piece of koi matting, clean it at each water change. works well for me; cheers; C

Ged
Koi Matting (also known as Japanese Matting) is a coarse mat that does not allow larger material to pass through it in the first stage of filtration in koi ponds. The Australian Koi Farm at Bringelly did sell it at one stage. Have a read of this discussion. http://www.aceforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=16880 I sit half a bioball on top of my downpipes. They allow the water to flow through normally but if they get clogged and the water backs up they just float off.

trofius
a small piece of gutter guard works well, just cut a strip curl it up and insert in to the top extending above the water level
