katanaone
both bio balls and ceramic noodles do roughly the same job. ceramic noodles would be better for a small canister filter for the simple reason that they are smaller.
Subgirl
IMO Matrix will do a better job than both. Simply because of it's porisity(sp?). But it is expensive. I have also recently found that scoria works very well in the same situation and can be purchased VERY cheaply from any landscape supplies. Just give it a GOOD wash...... fiona
Those expanded clay balls you get from hydro shops are a good medium too. Porous, stable, etc. Not expensive.
Canberra Alex
Hi Carlos, Bioballs dont have that high a surface area and are designed to have water flowing over them, Ceramic noodles have a much higher surface area (this can be variable) and IMHO do a much better job. they both have their uses and this is just my opinion.
