Mbuna44
I'm just wondering if anyone has ever used pumice as a filter medium. I have heard its inert and I imagine the surface area would be fantastic. My local beach has small size granules that you can just scoop off the beach. Perfect size for a canister. The only downside to this stuff is that it floats but in a canister with cartridges this is not really a problem. Just thought I would put it out there to get other peoples opinions. Even the larger pieces would be good for a sump filter.
Ageofaquariums
The external surface area is good but the closed cell structure locks off most the internal surface area. A case of smaller bits are prob a lot better.

fishdance
I use rounded gravel for media. Rounded is easier to stir and pour clean. It might not have the best surface area per volume but it has enough even for highly stocked tanks. Tank substrate also does a lot of the biological filtration so the canister can be primarily mechanical filtration.
