Spiesie
Hi,I am designing a simple sump (3x18x18) for a 6x2x2. And was wondering if a filter sock enough Mechanical Filtration? My design is as follows:- First chamber -> Water enters into a filter sock- Second chamber -> 10l of K1 media- Third chamber -> Eheim Substrat Pro, Ehfimech and purigen- Fourth chamber -> Return pumpSo, Is a filter sock enough Mechanical Filtration? Or do you think I should add some sponge/filter wool/etc?Thanks,Spiesie
Chuckmeister
I'm going to have a stab at this even though I haven't seen these before Firstly I'd say that these socks will work fine but what I see is they have no surface area so will get clogged quickly. As long as you are prepared to clean these every week or 2 then they should be fine.the benifits of sponge is that the whole sponge catches crap allowing you to be a little more lazy between sump maintanence. My first section on my sump pulls the water from bottom to top through a synthetic (inert) wool type of media. When its time to clean you just pull it out and replace. You could try it and if your not happy just pop an appropriate sized aquaclear or powerhead in the tank to help. Link2Hell
Chucka sock will filter better than just filter mat due to the micron rating they come inthis being so they would need to be cleaned more often due to surface area butusually the weir drain pipe gets wrapped in filter mat to pre filter the larger stuffthe best option would be a pre filter chamber if you don't have the weir drainpipe wrapped in filter wool that would sit on the sump tank to fill with pre filtermedia and have the sock on the outlet of thatwhat ever way you go you must pre filter before the bacterial media in the sump
