Tvw321
Hey folksI got given a red empress from my brother in law. I'm not sure if its a male or female. It's 5cm long, it has a red stripe developing on the tip of its dorsal fin. It is yet to get any colour in its body or in its head. I'm not sure if its too early or not. I have attached a photo. If you guys could let me know your thoughts that would be great. Thanks Tom.

malawi sand diver
Hi TomI couldn't see the photo but basically from now on you should start to see some red coming through on the fins, e.g. in the top back part of the dorsal and on the anal fin & tail. Also look out for any egg spots for it to be male. They start to show this from about 6cm, so you might not see it for a few weeks yet. Also, you will notice a blueish sheen around the lips & gills if it is male.It should be easier to tell once it reaches the 6-7cm size.Regards, Rob
firthy13
yeah, rob is right. i found the the first sign was a blue sheen on the lips.

Tvw321
Hey folks. It's been a few weeks now with little to no development in colour I did see it flattering itself against an open space of gravel kind of diving on it. I'm not sure if this is indicative of male or female. ThanksTom
frankenstrat
if it doesnt have blue lips by now i would guess female
firthy13
only going on the patten in the dorsal fin i would lean slightly towards male. but still a little early to 100% confirm. keep feeding him well and you will know soon enough.
Ged
I still think it is too early to call. Some will not start to colour up until they are closer to 10cms. Either way the fish looks really healthy.
Link2Hell
I'm calling it for a boydorsal margin colourlooks like the start of egg spots in the anal finlooks like the start of patterning in the tail
