MikeWs Fish
Hi All, I've had about 3 mouthfuls in the past week that have been swallowed by the females. Is this a sign of bad fishkeeping? Am i doing something wrong here? Or is it just bad luck? Mike W
jamo
It is common for females holding for the first few times to swallow mouthfulls of eggs. I assume it is because they are still learning how to do it properly. Generally if the fish are spawning often, they they must feel good and be in good condition, so i don't think that bad fish keeping would be the cause. Serial-Cichlid
If it's the first few mouthfuls the fish have had then it's not uncommon for them to swallow. Either that or they're being stressed out somehow (usually by othe tank inhabitants or impatient and over zealous fishkeepers) . MikeWs Fish
Some of the fish were new to it but my baernschi female swallowed too. She has held sucessfully a few times before. I dont think i would haev stressed them out because i was just observing and feeding the others. The male Ps Aurora would nip at the female that was holding everytime she looked like going for food. Probably to stop her from swallowing the eggs.
crabros
Hi Mike, I had a problem female that spat her eggs. I was told dont feed the tank when she had eggs. I let the tank go for 10 days and it worked. The moment I feed the tank the bugger spat. Now she holds for 10-12 days. I have done this 3 times and it has worked every time. The other reason they could spit is the eggs could be infertile or the fish is getting harrassed by others or the male. Hope this helps Brett

Adrian09
sometimes a female who has successfully breed before will spit. i think sometimes they just breed to soon and havent replenished their bodies. one or two of my females have done that and next time they breed they r fine.
