catcher
G'day all, I'm going through the "female's are carrying" for the first time, and I really don't know what to expect. I have an E yellow about to blow, her under mouth is very extended and black. A Kadango with extended under mouth but not as big as the E Yellow. A Red Empress that I witnessed do the deed last sunday, so I've gone from nothing to something in a very short while. My question is, they are all in a display tank that I am very reluctant to dismantle to catch the girls, so if I let them go full term and spit in the tank, will the fry be able to be sucked up with a hose If I'm careful, or are their hidding instinks going to be developed from the get go? I really don't want them to be tonights dinner for the other fish. glenn
Sarah
Hi Glenn if you let them spit in the tank they will most likely become a snack for the other fish , you could take them out , two weeks from the time you noticed they had a mouthful and place them in a fry saver to spit , sucking them up with a hose would be near impossible first of all you would have to be there when she spits and most likely they will be gobbled up by the others before u even got the hose in cheers Sarah
Serial-Cichlid
Hi Glenn If the fry get left in the tank very few would survive. If fry can get away from the larger fish, it would be close to impossible for you to get the siphon near them. I've never siphoned out malawi fry before, but I'd imagine it would be harder to siphon out malawi fry which held in the mother's mouth full term as they tend to be alot larger than Tanganyikans. I don't know if the vacuum would be strong enough to siphon them out. IMO Your best bet is to catch the females out (at night, I know you've tried before) and get them into holding tanks or good sized fry savers. crabros
Hi Glenn, Welcome to everyone's worst nightmare when fish bred. Having 20 tanks with females going off all the time it is a nightmare when you have to take rocks out then put rocks back in. After awhile you get used too it. The only way you can beat it is take the girls out and just have a display tank. As for using a syphon hose to catch them good luck as there won't be many to catch if you let them spit in the tank. I would set up a breeding trap (for the fry)catch the girl after 12 days then milk her. All the Best Brett

catcher
Hi Brett, You know I'm going to have to wait till my family goes to bed before i start cause I'll never be able to take the heckeling they are going to give me. The tank is in the main living area of the house. As I said before AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! glenn
catcher
Done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8pm till now, whats the time 11pm , AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH All three girls in the spare tank, Now next questions, they won't really eat until they spit, right? Once the first spits do I take her out of the tank and put straight back into the main tank or does she need to recoperate for a day or two? Will she eat her own fry? I'm also assuming the other girls still with mouthfuls won't touch the fry swimming round, but isolate them once they spit as they might eat the others fry? Sorry for all the questions but once you all set me straight I'll know for next time. glenn
Vanessa the Venustus
They definitely won't eat until they spit. The ideal thing would be to have all the girls seperate with their own fry so you can see each of them look after their babies, but that is impossible unless you have heaps of spare tanks! Perhaps have two of them spit into fry savers and let one spit into the 2 foot tank and keep her with her fry for about a week. It is always interesting to see the mothers behaviour. She will still take them into her mouth at night and to protect them.

Frank
Hi Glenn, Good luck with it and be patient, it is worth the wait. Cheers
catcher
My first babies !!!!!!!!!!!!!! The E Yellow spat today sometime, from what I can see about 10, all about 1cm long. I'll leave mum in for a day then move her back to the main tank for some fattening up. One down two to go, kadango and red empress. glenn
