aqua
Hi I have recently purchase a few anubius plant, and have place it in my cichlid tank for a few days, now it seems that some leave has gone yellowish. Is this nautral, or does it mean that I don't have enough light or too much or am I missing something? Thanks in Advance Terence
mianos
Leaves going yellow or leaves dissolving can be normal for a anubias plant recently purchased as they are often they are grown above the water or in very different conditions to your aquarium to make them grow much quicker. As long as the rhizome is healthy, there are enough nutrients in the water (there is not much needed for a slow growing plant like anubias but I dose with a trace additive once a week) and there is enough light it will grow new leaves in time. I have seen them grow from a rhizome with no leaves at all. (Some silly person accidentally put one in a hot bucket of water and the leaves all dissolved in a few days silly me). When they are adapting to new conditions the leaves are often smaller and fishlies seem to nibble at them. After a few months the leaves get back to normal size and the flishlies will leave them alone. They are a nice plant for sure, I have quite a collection of different species. aqua
Miano Thank you for your information, I intitially thought that lthe ight might have been too intense or overly long exposure which cause them to go yellow. So any Anubius plant is ok for long direct light exposure or should I keep them indirectly away from it? Thanks
mianos
You may damage the leaves with direct light but the new leaves will be adapted to it. Just because anubias does grow well in low light it does not mean it does not grow in high light. All the leaves might drop off but if there are sufficient nutrients they can grow new leave squite quickly. I put one of mine under an MH and the leaves went yellow and melted but it grew 3 new leaves in one month. The leaf stem and rhizome also grew redish.
