Lighting question for aquarium plants

I have 3 lights with edison screw type fittings hung from the ceiling over one of my tanks which houses turtles. I use 1 UV globe over the turtles basking spot with the edison screw fitting.

I am wondering if there is a particular globe that I could use for growing Anubis & Java Fern plants in the 2 remaining edison fittings?

(I also have room for a 6ft fluro as well so I was going to get an aqurium aquaglo/powerglo tube for that.)

Bunnings hardware I saw edison fitting energy saving globes for sale which are Natural 5000k lumen. The brand is Nelson. I am unsure of the watts but they were equal to a large outdoor spot light (I think). Would this be a good globe to try as it is 5000k lumen?

Any better globe recomendations would be appriciated.

regards

Greg

Hi,

I have used those 5000K CF bulbs from bunnings to grow plants, not java fern or anubias, but they worked well on other easy to grow plants such as wysteria, amazon swords and others. So i would say they would be fine for your suggested plants. I noticed bunnings never seem to stock 6400K bulbs, but what i found is, if you go to a $2 store or the reject shop, or "the warehouse" or similar stores, they stock 6400K CF bulbs, which im using at the moment, and they seem to be ok as well, and cheaper. Dont know which of the spectrums preforms better (i know 6400K is the recommended spectrum).

The depth of your tank will determine what wattage bulbs you use, though for those plants u suggested, light only need to be low-moderate.

Hope that helps

i have also used these energy saver bulbs on a small planted tank. They work quite well. I noticed at a hardware shop a couple of weeks ago that they were selling growlux edisons but they were like $20 or something ridiculous.

6400k's is pretty much ok, albiet bluey hue but it'll do fine, infact for anubias and java fern which are low requirement plants, most lighting would be fine with them.

However if you're gonna grow them IN your turtle enclosure, wouldn't your turts chew them up?

Pardon my silliness but i kinda got that from your first post huh.gif , and oh yeah, are your trying to grow them underwater or emersed?

Yes Punie I do keep the plants in with my Turtles. The turtles seem to leave them alone. They more tend to sleep in the larger Anubis plants that are in the tank, rather than eat them.

Mbuna I noticed you are in Hornsby as well. What hardware store did you see the Grolux globes & where they the energy saving type.

I guess Ill give it a go & see what happens. Hopefully 2 edison screw globes & 1 fluro across the tank will be enough for healthy plant growth. It just would be a shame to not use the 2 edison light fittings that are there.

Any other suggestions greatly appriciated

Many thanks

Greg

My friend Jon uses the CF Nelsons from Bunnings in daylight. They are great cos they are available in a higher wattage compared to many other CF with Edison Screw fittings. For these low light plants I would definitely go with the Nelsons just on convenience alone. I think they are available up to 48w which is far more than the usual 12 and 16 watt cheaper fittings you can get.
