It must be the day for it.

I have had a few today, when normally I get none. They have all come through from email addys which appear to be forum users.

But, don't forget these worm virus's collect email addys as they travel. The addy which it appears to come from is not normally the addy it actually came from.

Update your virus scanner, and quarantine or delete anything which it picks up.

Sez, I may be wrong here but I dont think the virus has anything to do with being connected to ACE at the time.

From what I understand it is email based. It collects emails from the address book of computers which do not have protection, and keeps adding more to the list each time.

We all come here regularly, and often email each other too. I think that's the problem but someone with more technical know-how might be able to elaborate further.

If the popups appear to be coming through ACE, then it is not popups or advertisers your dealing with, it is likely to be "spyware" and "adware" which infects your computer and is nothing to do with any website. I recommend downloading "Adaware" myself. Get the free private version. Updates are provided free also, no need to purchase or register.

I've got the usual firewall, antivirus and adware etc but the best thing I've put on my computer lately is Mailwasher. It allows me to view my emails while they are still on the server and to delete the ones I dont want. It also gives you the option to bounce their spam back to them though it doesn't make much of a difference seeing as they use different hotmail accounts. Since I've started my forum, I'm copping 3 or 4 virus's a day from all sorts of people. I even got one yesterday directly from an ISP..never had that one before dry.gif

My two rules of thumb is that if it looks dodgey on mailwasher then it doesn't get on my computer and I never open attachments unless I have verified where it has come from. I've lost two hard drives to viruses...not fun re-installing sad.gif

i keep my personal e- mail adress for close friends and use hotmail or yahoo for the web then if it gets spammed ijust close it and start a new one, i too used to use mailwasher but after bouncing some spam the source kept bouncing it back, ive found the above strategy best. as for viruses, with xp if you go onto any site before downloadig the critical updates(or service pack 2) you will almost certainly get the blaster worm and other malware which contrary to popular opinion cannot be removed and will keep shutting down your computer(exploiting xp"s registration key shortcomings) the only way to get rid of it is to format the hard drive .just an aside ive installed sp2 today and at the moment all seems to be ok ,has anyone else? any problems?

Hi guys,

Ad and spyware really irritates me. Even the most experienced of computer users can have problems getting them removed.

Your best bet is to run both spybot and adaware together, as they will pick up slightly different things sometimes. In addition, run adaware in windows safe mode to be more thorough.

If you have unwittingly got a "coolwebsearch" toolbar on your Internet Explorer browser, then you are in for a world of trouble. Popups, adware etc are randomised so at first you think it is coming from a certain website or something. In reality it is originating from your browser.

Another tip is not to use internet explorer. Its a little less secure and the most targeted in terms of spyware/adware because its the most popular browser. There are any number of alternatives that are just as good.

Finally I'd use some sort of firewall such as zonealarm. This enables you to monitor exactly what goes in and out of your computer, as well as any cookies etc Its really user friendly and intuitive to setup so don't worry if you are concerned about complications setting it up.

If you go to this forum and follow all the instructions to the tee, you should be able to clean up your computer. After that, make sure you have adaware, spybot, and zonealarm running at all times to ensure less chance of reinfection. Oh I also run the latest norton antivirus, it has some of the commoner adwares in it and will also of course protect against viruses.

Its a long process but its worth it, especially since you will probably see performance improvements as well.
