cichlidan
HI, I am ipuzzled about my Frontosa. About three weeks ago i moved my tank from one room to another. I was worried about the move as the tank was being emptied completely. I tried to do it as quickly as possible to keep the filter bacteria alive. (The tank was well established for 2 years in previous spot) The move went well. The four fronts settled in and their two leleupi friends (which unlike the rest of their family and a colony of julies all met their fate in the jaws of the biggest front). Anyway, all has been going well until the last 4 days when the fish have become very jumpy and skittish. They have always been this way but more so in the past few days. They have damaged themselves on the rocks I have removed in the past for the same reasons. They live in a 3ft by 2ft by 1.5ft tank (250L). I have done a 50% change tonight however they look very battered. (They have done this sort of thing befor eand have NEVER got an infection in their wounds due to decent water quality their fins always grow back quickly) Is it a water parameter that causes this behaviour? Or is the tank simply too small for these big guys and they cant help bumping into things? I am considering parting company with them b/c if it is the latter I cannot fit a larger tank. I have found all cihclids I have kept in the past to exhibit the same behaviour but due to smaller size never damages themselves as much. Advice much appreciated!!! DAN P.S THe leleupi are not skittish and are not afraid and act almost like dither fish. They are always the first to feed and encourage the fronts to feed as well. cichlidan
The room is kept dim for algae control. THe fronts now just seem to sleep all the time. They go into their little caves and just lie there like mexican walking fish looking absolutely stoned. THey take on their darker night colours all day. The smallest front has come out and is showing its white again but still lethargic. The fins of two fish are frayed but mainly from clashing with rocks during their psycho skits. No signs of ick No signs of flukes or worms No signs of lack of oxygen (air pump on 24/7/ fish gills hardly punp at all) PH around 8.4 Nil nitrite Nil ammonia The fish are off their food. Two leleupi also in the tank acting normally. Swimming around, fins at full stretch still interested in food though not as much and sometimes have a little mini twitch run through their body. Cannot put my finger on this one. Usually the big front comes up and nails dinner like an oscar. I have left a few floating pellets in there for 8 hours not one has been touched. Have added melafix in small doses yesterday and today and turned the geater up a little just to cover bacterial bases in case. My guess is one of two things. 1. Bacterial Infection (which I doubt but have added melafix and cranked the heater up a bit just in case) 2. Some sort of poisoning but I cant put my finger on anything unusual. PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN I AM OUT OF IDEAS!!!! Thanks Dan
