Luke K
Hi Guys, I am setting up a new tank and looking to put one or two breeding colonies in their. phatoscarlover
Hey luke what size tank are we talking here?? Cheers Andy
Ducksta
You should be looking at what is available that interests you. There is plenty of money to be made with the easiest and most common of fish, and plenty to be made with brand spanking new to country fish. For example, a colony of electric blues and electric yellows will produce oodles of fry, provided sufficient space, they will reach saleable size very quickly and you would be unlucky to get stuck with fry. These fish are always in demand, and always get a fair price, which is fairly stable. A colony of one of these new mbuna types popping up however will set you back substantially more, and you need to make sure you get your fry on the market before the bubble bursts (so to speak) to recoup costs/turn a profit. These early fry will fetch high prices, sometimes as high as the original stock for a short period, but once those fry hit breeding size and they are in the tanks of a few dozen semi-able breeders, the buM will fall out of the market due to oversupply and you may be left scratching yourself. So either way you could be successful in turning out numbers of fry, or you could end up with a nice display tank, either way, my advice is to research and decide on a fish you want! For example, you may say you want some kind of peacock, and get your heart set on that. A more suitable question could later be, I want this peacock species/varient, and I want a second colony to cohabit and breed in the tank, what might be suitable. Your question is way too open, you define nothing for us to work with. So the reality is, its up to you!!!

Ducksta
you also raised a good point, all the technical aspects will play a huge role in determining what is suitable.
Luke K
Thank guys, The tank is a standard 4 foot. I have a display tank now with various peacocks(Lwanda, Red Rubin, Eureka Red and a couple of others), a couple of Tropheus Nkonde, cobalt blues, e yellows, mainganos etc. I have a wonderful Lwanda who I would dearly love to set up a colony with. I am not breeding with the intention to 'make money', I can not breed on a huge scale i.e. 20 tanks, although I will one day. I was thinking of having a colony of Lwanda's and Mainganos. Does anyone have some nice Lawanda females?
Guest Gutty
Lwanda would be a great fish to breed in my opinion. There isn't a huge amount of them getting around, they are probably one of the most liked peacocks, especially by experience fish keepers who are over the whole "Gotta have the brightest of bright fish" ideal. ie: red rubins etc..... They also happen to be one of my favourite peacocks.... As for the mangainos, in my experience(minimal) they are way to agro to go with some peacocks, but many say they aren't. I'll leave that to some one thats got a bit more experience with them. If you have trouble finding females for your lwanda, i have a nice colony of Chiwindi for sale........ Luke K
I will start the search for Lwanda females, hopefully I can get a few at breeding age. I picked up some young mainganos last week, they breed like crazy! Thanks for all the advise, I really appreciate the friendliness (I hope that's a word) of all the people who breed cichlids. Other hobbies are not so friendly. Cheers, Luke
anchar
Hi Luke, A a few years back I paid a "relative" fortune for 6 G. acei "tanzania"...I liked the look of them when I saw an old Ad Konings video. Now I can't give the fry away...however I will not move them on because I still love them heaps. Don't keep fish that you reckon you will make money from...keep fish that you like, regardless of their retail/re-sale value! merjo
