trofius
Ok few people have asked so now here it is, this is what I did to stop my lepto malasa from dropping dead from wasting disease.. I didnt save em all, but did stop the deaths, and fish that were obviosly wasted began to again put on weight and are today alive.. here goes. I remeber this in a thread early this year. I actually think I may have started it..lol Anyways I tried heaps of stuff, And i ended up finding that i got the wasting from the parents of my malasa.. well the new ones. Overall i got 10 young malasa and they started to waste pretty quick, i lost about 1 a fornight after the first month, they were about 4cm First i tried that tetracycline treatment, umm Aquarium science brand, Aqua-cure.. this stuff really messed with the water it went red and frothed on top and I didnt like it, so I did a 1/3 water change every week for 3 weeks water still a bit red form the filter media storing it, then releasing it. i think by this time there was 3 dead Then I tried using metro as posted before fed them for the first week of each month using this method. After a few weeks i started using aquamaster fluke and tapeworm tablets, (praziquantel) as my leptos were not eating very much , spitting etc, they had stringy white poos like tropheus get , which is why i started using the metro. also that is similar to what worm symptoms are so why not...? by now 2 more dead, and i had lost the 4 regani kipili n the tank..upset! I used the tapeworm treatment for 2 months, doing 1/3 water changes once a month before comencing the new treatment, ensuring I vaccumed off the bottom of the tank ,,sand. as thats were any parisites may be. I cleaned out the big home made 50l canister after the second treatment. I was also still using the metro soaked food for the first week each month, overall for 4 months..they started to eat again after a few weeks and started to put on weight. In the end i lost 6/10 of the small leptos, and the 4 regaini (same symptoms) 6 months later there are no reoccorances of it , however the leptos are still only about 5-6cm kinda stunted, the male of the 4 remaining leptos is about 6-7cm, thay all have nice plump bellies and love their flake food( sera san, sera flora, OSI spirilina mix) along with a weekly feeding of frozen brine shrimp. As a side note the larger male leptos7- 8cm were not effcted, as wern't the Xenotilapia spilopterus in the tank, and the daffodils and the leleupi.. I hope that this helps because it is a really dishearnting disease..I didnt loose all of em so I count this as a successful treatment..considering i didnt have a clue what was going on in the begining. anchar
Hi Mick, Thanks for sharing..I have never run in to the "wasting disease"...however a friend of mine has. We found the nitrates were extremely high, and once they were brought down, the fish did recover (without medication). Maybe just fluked it. On another note, a while ago I posted asking for help with a mystery illness in some small fronties. In brief, I was losing them (but none of the other occupants were affected) and had treated them with everything I could think of. In absolute desperation, I threw them into a tank out the back that was dark with tannin. From that day on, I never lost another one....curing power of wood???? I don't know....but it worked! merjo
trofius
Hey all Well it is always best to try the most natural non chemical method..As I usually dislike using chemicals, up until 12 months ago I didnt use and water neutralizer either,,, i did have a go at natural, but still i lost about 4 in 3 weeks after i had them for about 2 months, All the water parameters were really good, pH was up about, 8.5 The tank they were in had a 50liter canister filter so heaps of biomedia, and the water was chrystal clear, the filter also has about 16kg of crushes shell, coral etc to buffer the pH which is why it sat so stable at 8.5... It was just weird that some of the fishes were so affected and others didnt seem to care...
