OziOscar
Just be careful on cheapie tanks... I got one from [somewhere] and the quality of finish compared to one a few bucks dearer from [somewhere else] was so much better it wasn't funny. Even in a 24 x 12 x 18 it's reassuring to know someone still has attention to detail and does little things like bevel / chamfer the corners, make neat seals rather than bodgying with black angle plastic to cover their quick and dirty, puts cast handles on lids rather than little segments of glass siliconed together, etc. In a big 'un, the glass thickness can be a HUGE issue. Some places are making / selling some items that seem a bit close to the safety margin. After all - who wants a 6 footer suddenly dumping its load on the lounge-room floor. Cheers - OziOscar. OziOscar
If you're after tanks and want to spec exactly what you want, then the mob at Rockdale on the Princes Hwy (forget their name) build to order at a fair price. A couple of the people who bought Oscars from me (heaps of juvies or breeders) bought their custom glassware down there and it was nice. I've only seen one large off-the-shelf from there and it was OK - not AAA-Class, but at the price you couldn't argue. Good enough finish and construction overall and of good thickness and with no anomalies in the glass (lumps, bumps, scratches, visble thickness variances, etc). I guess it all depends if it's to be a major display item and needs to be fully classy or if it's just another tank for some tankbusters. I've seen some really nice stuff around in some of the corporate offices (merchant banks, MNC, etc) but don't know the maker. If anyone does know who makes truly superior bespoke tanks I would love to know. I've bought some smaller stuff (up to 48 x 18 x XX) from Seven Hills LFS (World of Fish?) and they were pretty reasonable quality and well priced - good seals, nice edge work, good fit and finish. The prices gets better the more hardware you buy, like most places. It is worth making a call before you go. And don't forget when you're shopping - credit cards speak - cash speaks louder. Try your luck on the day. Cheers - OziOscar.
