Rol&Jas
Hi, We made a brine shrimp hatchery out of a 1.25l coke bottle and wired it upside down on one of the vertical poles of our fishrack. In summer it was working fine because it was warm. We haven't used it since then, but we will need to hatch brine shrimp eggs for leleupi fry. Our question is, now that it is cold will our hatchery work? We assume it won't, because the water will be cold. Please help us with your ideas. Thank you
Teamsherman
Gday, You can warm the water by using a normal 40watt desk lamp. Thats what i use with success. Place it about an inch or two from the coke bottle and leave it on till they hatch to your liking. HTH, Cheers, Alan.
j.s
good idea teamsherman, i might give that a try I usually just use a coke bottle upright with an air line in it, works a treat. When its cold, i hang the bottle partially in the water from the side of the tank with a little hook that I made out of a coat hanger.
Teamsherman
Yeah give it a go, it works a treat, and the globe isnt hot enought to damage the bottle or cause any grief. Cheers and happy hatching. Alan.
trofius
I'd just place the bottle in a tank that is heated.. that easy, or even in the sump if you have one , with enough room...

Fins
are brine shrimp really the bees-knees for fry? grace Hi Grace, The short answer is "yes" IMHO I think most african fry will survive on other foods, but if you are having problems with high mortality, bbs may be the answer. Some species just can't survive on anything else in our artificial enviroment. Have a read about how some marine species are bred and raised eg: sea-horses, or aquaculture: prawn farming etc. hth, fins ps: sorry rol&jas for hi-jacking. this probably should be a new thread. trofius
Have the container up side down in the tank,, when you cut the bottom off leave a small fap bit that you can fold over the side of the tank and peg on. The bottle will sit in the corner under the bars and not float up or move around.. it will be less boyant if the water level in the bottle is close to that of the tank.. Rol&Jas
Thanks Mick I will try that. I really prefer your method to the lamp heating, because that way you do not need to use extra electricity. p.s. No worries Fins
