DREMEN
Welcome to Winter Well my 4 foot tank is dropping 2 degrees over night When I goto bed it is 26 degrees, but when I wake up it is 24 I have a 200watt heater positioned on the right side of the tank. If I add another 200watt heater to the left side (and set it for 26 degrees) will this help maintain a stable temp around 26 degrees? Thanks Ben
Ducksta
Rather than get another 200, spend the extra couple of dollars, get a 300, and that should do the trick on its own. If later on, when it starts to get really cold, you think you need back up for the 300, you will have a 200 on hand. I have 300W heaters heating about 300 litres each (1.5 times a standard 4' tank), and they do it easy, although the room doesnt get as cold as some. DREMEN
Thanks My house gets freezing cold in winter at night time I think I have a 300watt heater somewhere, so I will use that with the 200watt as backup Should they both be set to 26 degrees? Guest Gutty
Yes, set them the same. Do you have much water flow past the heaters ?
DREMEN
Yeah on one side I have a intank filter, and on the other side I can setup a powerhead
Guest Gutty
Well just as an example, i use a single 300 in my 6x18x18 and get maybe a 1 degree drop overnight in a very cold house. But it's right next to a 2100lph powerhead. The intake should be doing a bit though...........

And I get a 2 degrees drop... maybe more sometimes I might have to add the other heater and another powerhead to get some more flow
Guest Gutty
Maybe just move your heater so it's in front of the outlet rather than the inlet ?? Might save you buying anything. Just a thought
DREMEN
Yeah I might try and work something lile that out Thanks. I have a spare heater anyway, so who i might try that after I am just trying to keep my fish alive first of all!
parrdog
Have you thought of covering your tank with a blanket at night to keep the heat in? Also, are the curtains/blinds in your house closed at night to maintain house warmth?
graceless
i am experiencing the same thing. it's dropping right down to 22 for me. it's amazing how much it drops. i think my fish don't like me because of it! i have a spray bar outlet - will putting it near that work too? grace
oshuyi
use foam and cover your tank i reckon that's the best way to insulate it
parrdog
Hey Grace, be careful with those temp drops, your fish will be very prone to white spot disease if it keeps up. I had similar probs. I was using a Via Aqua heater (300W) and the temp was dropping overnight. I switched to a Tetratec (300W) and since have suffered no temp drops. I got it from Age Of Aquariums. Jamie. chorrylan
you're worrying about a 2 degree temperature drop???? My fish have to endure at least a 5 or 6 degree drop whenever I do a water change this time of year (I can only find the time to do it late at night and they get water straight out of the garden hose, ice 'n all). Not only do they endure it but it's often a spawning trigger. Mind you I haven't worked out if that's because they like it, because they think they're doomed and are desperately having one last fling in the interests of species survival or if they're shaggin' to keep warm.
