Sick Clown loaches

Hi members

I need some help to identify whats on my 2 clown loaches & 2 catfish. They seem to have some dust particles on them. Its all over their bodies. thery seem to be breathing ok, At one stage one of the clown loaches tried to shake it off, my other africans dont have any problems. The dust particles are tiny, & they seem white, & all over their body. They seem to be swimming around ok sadsmiley02.gif

To me it seems like Velvet disease.

Thanks for any help.

I also agree with whitespot. Loaches are unfortunately the first little buggers to cop this problem and they tend to get a flogging from it as well. Treatment asap from first sign is important to stop fatalities. Nice link BTW

Hey guys,

definatly white spot, id crank the heater up to 29-30 degrees as it has trouble surviving in higher temperatures. The reason you only use half the meds for clowloachs is that they are a scaleless fish so it will affect them alot more than a cichlid.I would treat the tank with something for whitespot and then retreat after 10 days as often it doesnt kill it properly the first time round.HTH Cheers Andy

I thought that if the white spot is in its visible state then it is under the skin and can't be treated by medicine's?

Is that correct?

Hey Peter, I wouldn't rely on a bit of salt and an extra degree or two. From my understanding ich can survive quite happily under warmer conditions. What I thought it did was just speed the cycle up eg they grow quicker and die faster BUT still breed and multiply. If you've ever seen ich in action you'd medicate!! or you can potentially lose most of your tank. Ich also from my experience is not easy to get under control and can need on ocassion a second treatment.

You treat the water... because the fish swim/breath the treated water it is both absorbed through the skin and gills - I don't think you can really stuff a pill in a fish's mouth...lol

Another Tip is to use a hospital tank... this is a smaller tank like a 1.5ft/2ft tank that you can separate the sick fish for treatment.

Treatment again is the water or better still the quatity of water. If you have a 4ft ot 6ft tank it will cost you a bomb to treat all that water.

Read the directions carefully. Over treatment can kill the fish.

There are a few things that you should consider

1) do not put wet hands or nets on other tanks, it is contageous and you will spread the disease - one tank = one net

2) increase temp (28-30*C) to speed up parasites life cycle you can only kill them off in the free swimming stage

3) increase air when increasing temp

4) run a second course of treatment and read the instructions

5) I recommend Aquasonic Ichonex you can use it full strength on loaches, catfish etc and it doesn't effect the filter bacteria

6) dormant Ich is always present in water and needs a host to multiply but it will only effect fish that are stressed water, temp, aggression etc

7) be careful with salt when there are loaches and catfish they usually don't like it
